Since July 2001, pilot initiatives pertaining drip irrigation techniques have been taking place among farmers in order to make a more efficient use of available water minimizing non-productive water losses, to get more uniform and higher crop yields and to get reduced cost for fertilizers and labour. Experimenting this irrigation system with farmers, mixing modern materials with ordinary hydraulic materials available we came out with a low cost solution that permit to irrigate a 15mt. X 6mt. with a cost of about 2,000 Ksh (30 USD).
Furthermore, in order to promote environmental awareness and conservation in the area, 4 tree nurseries with indigenous and exotic trees have been established in the project area and training of community groups in soil conservation and forestation has been undertaken. First people were encouraged to plant a variety of tree and fruit species at no cost at all. Due to the ever-increasing demand for seedlings, the project introduced a modest fee of Ksh. 7 (0.08 euro) for every seedling purchased.
