Our aims…
Raising the socio-economic, sanitary and nutritional conditions of the population living in the project area through the scattering of public drinking kiosks;
Setting up of a water user association for the management and maintenance of the waterworks; it shall have to be self-reliant in its operation, management and financial skills;
Freeing time and feminine resources, which are nowadays wasted in the water supply, in order to improve the sanitary, domestic, child care and income generating activities;
CEFA started the realisation of the water project in 1993 and currently it is under its third and final phase. It is co-financed by the European Union and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The KKWP is a gravitational, meter based water supply scheme and, at its completion, a main adduction pipeline with a branch tree layout and 16 different local distribution networks (Local Water Systems) will comprise it.
The water source is the Kathita River, where an intake was built at 2,500mt asl to get the authorized amount of water and convey it to a sedimentation basin, through a tunnel of 480 mt and another length of piping.
The KKWP supplies water through public fountains for domestic use only (i.e. for drinking, washing and cooking purposes, for kitchen garden irrigation and livestock watering) to about 35,000 people. Kiosk operators, appointed by the community, sell the water in the kiosks at 1 Ksh (1 euro= 85 Ksh) per jerry-can (24lit), 42 Ksh /m3, the cheapest price you can get in Kenya.
Sum of total consumption from year zero
Local communities participated since the beginning at the realization of KKWP trough labour and money. Those people who participated in the digging of the trenches and paid a certain amount of money are the full members of the project.
They have the right to pay the water at a cheaper price and vote in the community assembly and being elected as community representative.
Already 8 LWSs are in operation, 3 are under construction and will be completed within march 2004, 3 more will be built in 2004 and the remaining in 2005 if funds will continue to be available.
